Work Experience

Director of Development

2021 - Present

Substantial

  • Worked closely with the executive leadership team on several aspects of business planning, including budgeting, resource allocation, sales proposals, project estimation, escalations, restructuring, and compensation.
  • Fostered a culture of technical excellence and ensured that each project had the right bets.
  • Collaborated with project owners, design teams, and client engineering teams to devise product and technical strategies that resulted in unique features and products that users loved.
  • Established our product practice to define the roles and responsibilities of project leads. As a result, fewer projects required escalations, and new leads were less likely to have missed expectations.
  • Scaled the team by hiring and onboarding multiple high-caliber full-stack engineers.
  • Engaged in the entire development cycle, from discovery to launch to maintenance, and contributed wherever necessary, including coding and pairing up to 70% of the time.
  • Mentored and coached team engineers to support their professional development by finding opportunities for them to succeed and aligning interests.

Associate Principal Developer

2019 - 2021

Substantial

  • Successfully guided the development of a mobile port of the Exploding Kittens game, which was originally a best-selling physical card game. The mobile version has remained one of the top-selling card games on iOS and Android for over five years.
  • Managed teams of up to six developers, providing guidance and support to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions.
  • Trained and mentored teams of developers on Unity3D, React, and Ruby on Rails frameworks. Incorporated best practices for design, development, and deployment, which resulted in increased productivity and proficiency across the organization.
  • Actively participated in dev ops by setting up and debugging hosting, CI/CD pipelines, AWS, DNS, Chef server configuration scripts, deployment, and A/B testing.
  • Led multiple e-commerce payment integrations to simplify payments in the complicated cannabis industry.
  • Presented regular status reports and demos to stakeholders and organized cross-functional problem-solving workshops to tackle scoping, estimation, trouble-shooting, continuous improvement, and feature prioritization.
  • Strongly prioritized user experience, usability, and accessibility in all projects.
  • Cultivated a collaborative and productive work environment while meeting deadlines.

Senior Developer

2009 - 2017

Substantial

  • Successfully delivered 40 web, mobile, and video game projects by using right-sized approaches that optimized resource allocation and efficient project management techniques. The projects were completed on time and within budget constraints while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Designed and implemented responsive front-end solutions for multiple websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and employed frameworks like React and jQuery to create dynamic user interfaces with seamless integration to back-end systems through technologies like AJAX and JSON APIs.
  • Developed robust back-end solutions for multiple websites and mobile applications, utilizing technologies such as Ruby on Rails, Express.js, Node.js, Sinatra, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL. The solutions ensured efficient data management and seamless integration with front-end systems.
  • Led training sessions for teams of developers on building iOS applications using pair programming techniques, test-driven development (TDD), and behavior-driven development (BDD).
  • Integrated third-party APIs like Stripe, ElasticSearch, Google Maps, Slack, SendGrid, Twilio, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Trello, Shopify, Google Analytics, Mixpanel, CircleCI, Sentry.io, and more, making the projects highly functional and integrated.
  • Mentored and coached new team members by providing guidance on best practices, conducting training sessions on company policies and procedures, and facilitating knowledge-sharing activities such as code reviews and pair programming. The approach led to a productive and collaborative team environment.
  • Analyzed project requirements by conducting stakeholder interviews, assessing potential risks, and developing mitigation strategies. This approach ensured timely delivery of high-quality products and helped avoid project setbacks.

Rails Magician

2008 - 2009

ActiveRain

I helped bring a top-250 traffic blogging site into modern dev practices. During this time, I crunched away at Ruby on Rails performance, optimizing some 150 database tables and associated queries, and bringing the service outages down to a dull roar. I also helped the site scale by sharding the data and introducing caching. I also built out an auction system for their in-house ad network.

Side Projects

Morse Toad

2020-Present

iOS/Android Unity3D App

Morse Toad teaches people morse code using the Koch method that exposes the student to full-speed Morse Code from day one, adding a letter at a time once they've mastered the last. It sells well and remains a top resource for people wanting to learn Morse Code.

Places I've Pooped

2015-2018

iOS Objective-C App

Places I've Pooped was an app that I made as a joke which ended up growing into a small cultural phenomenom. It empowered the user to track on a map every place they've pooped, so they could then compare their territory vs. their friends. I sold the app to an investor for a tidy sum.
